I never planned on becoming an apartment locator.
Hell, I didn't even want to be in real estate. The only reason I even got my license was because it was my mom's idea. I was broke, desperate, and out of ideas.
I didn't want to be in real estate. I didn't want to be another desperate fake-smiling open-house-showing real estate agent.
I didn't want to be broke stumbling around from gig to gig trying to pay next month's rent.
I couldn't go back to "the office". I tried the 9-5 thing, but I felt my soul dying. I couldn't live on somebody else's schedule doing work I didn't care about for people I didn't like.
I knew what I didn't want.
What I wanted was trickier. I knew I wanted flexibility. I wanted to work when I wanted and from where I wanted. I wanted to book flights around the world whenever I wanted without ever asking for permission.
I wanted to make money - at least enough to not be poor. Anything beyond the basics would have been a blessing.

But how could I get all that? How could I get my cake and eat it too?
I remember a friend telling me how apartment locators "made good money". Whatever, fuck it. I'll give it a shot. I was desperate. I had to do something.
I interviewed at a bunch of agencies. Most of the top agencies rejected me because "I wasn't a good fit".
I joined the one that seemed the least shitty (none felt like good places to be).
I joined....and it was terrible. There was no training. The office was stuffy. The agents had no personality. The leads sucked.
In a month I made $500 - still not enough to pay rent. It was back to the Bank of Mom and Dad.
Next month I joined a new agency. This was much better. The they trained me, the agents were cool, and the leads were better.
There I closed my first deal and made $1500. It was enough to pay for the month's expenses and the last time I asked my parents for money.
From then on my life changed. I closed more and more deals and started making real money. And the coolest part was that I actually LIKED apartment locating.
I loved how simple and straightforward the business was. I loved getting to meet clients and make new friends. I loved that I didn't have to deal with bullshit paperwork and contract negotiations.
Apartment locating went from something I was going to do for a few months to something I would still be doing 5 years later.
